A Book Review

I’m so excited about this Internal Family Systems workbook written by the founder of IFS Therapy, Richard Schwartz. I wish I had had access to this workbook when I was first experiencing Internal Family Systems (IFS) as a client and when I was learning about IFS Therapy as a Counsellor.

Probably the thing I like the most is the easy-to-access checklists, such as this one as to what might be most useful to focus on in IFS Therapy:

A checklist of areas that may affect your life and where IFS Therapy would be beneficial.

Then there are the many recordings of visualisations to access when you buy the book – super-useful for practicing accessing parts, Sef/Soul and for listening deeply to parts. A great compliment to doing IFS Therapy or a great way to start getting to know your parts.

A list of strategies used in IFS such as mapping your parts, Self holding discomfort,

There are many journalling-like tasks to support you in getting to know your parts – I love this list of the strategies that Manager parts might use (my parts know many of these well!):

List of strategies used by managerer parts such as perfection, performing, pleasing, controlling, seeking certainty

And a list of strategies that Firefighter parts might use to distract/ avoid / escape or react (any sound familiar?):

List of strategies used by firefighter parts such as numbing, shutting down

I highly recommend this workbook – especially if you are new to IFS or you are keen to find out more! I’ll also be sharing many of these practices with my clients.
